I always start screen using "screen -DR", which detaches an existing screen running somewhere (doesn't matter) and reattaches it wherever I currently reside.
Shortcut keys for GNU screen:

| C-a a | Type a literal C-a |
| C-a A | Set the name for a tab |
| C-a c | Create a new screen session |
| C-a d | Detach screen |
| C-a X | Password protect your screen session |
| C-a C-a | Jump to last used tab |
| C-a p | Jump to previous tab |
| C-a n | Jump to next tab |
| C-a (Number) | Jump to tab of number |
| C-a " | Show list of all open tabs. |
| C-a C-[, C-a [ | Copy (and enable scrollback) |
| C-a C-], C-a ] | Paste |
| C-a _ | Turn on/off screen monitoring for 15 seconds of silence |
| C-a M | Turn on/off screen monitoring for 15 seconds of activity |
| C-a : | Start command line mode |
| C-a S | Split a screen into two regions |
| C-a Tab | Jump to the next region |
| C-a + | Increase current region by 3 lines |
| C-a - | Decrease current region by 3 lines |
| C-a X | Lock screen and remove current region |
| C-a h | Write current layout of text on screen to file "hardcopy.0". It's not a useful command. |
| C-a H | Begin/End a log file of current terminal to "screenlog.0". |
| C-a k | Kill current tab. |
