I always start screen using "screen -DR", which detaches an existing screen running somewhere (doesn't matter) and reattaches it wherever I currently reside.

Shortcut keys for GNU screen:

C-a ?Bring up the shortcuts screen
C-a aType a literal C-a
C-a ASet the name for a tab
C-a cCreate a new screen session
C-a dDetach screen
C-a XPassword protect your screen session
C-a C-aJump to last used tab
C-a pJump to previous tab
C-a nJump to next tab
C-a (Number)Jump to tab of number
C-a "Show list of all open tabs.
C-a C-[, C-a [Copy (and enable scrollback)
C-a C-], C-a ]Paste
C-a _Turn on/off screen monitoring for 15 seconds of silence
C-a MTurn on/off screen monitoring for 15 seconds of activity
C-a :Start command line mode
C-a SSplit a screen into two regions
C-a TabJump to the next region
C-a +Increase current region by 3 lines
C-a -Decrease current region by 3 lines
C-a XLock screen and remove current region
C-a hWrite current layout of text on screen to file "hardcopy.0". It's not a useful command.
C-a HBegin/End a log file of current terminal to "screenlog.0".
C-a kKill current tab.
